Image Description: |
Two Barnacle Geese in profile |
Image notes: |
The Barnacle goose gets its name from the ancient belief that they grew from barnacles on the shore. This was said to have come about because their nests andeggs were never found. The truth is nearly as unbelievable. They nest on inaccessible ledges in high Arctic mountains. The young jump from the nest at the mother's call and float to the ground.
